Dionysius of Alexandria
(d. c. 264)
   Bishop and Theologian.
   Dionysius was a pupil of origen and became head of the Catechitical School of Alexandria. In 247 he was consecrated Bishop of Alexandria. During the Decian persecution, he had to flee to the Libyan desert and he was also banished during the Valerian persecutions. Although only fragments of his writings survive, he is remembered for his determined opposition to the doctrines of Sabellius. His letter to Pope Dionysius on the godhead was prompted by the controversy. Dionysius has been accused of anticipating the teachings of the heretic arius, but athanasius maintained that he was orthodox in his opinions.
